Summer 2010 Program

June 28 -August 6, 2010

URIEL WEINREICH PROGRAM
IN YIDDISH LANGUAGE, LITERATURE & CULTURE

The Uriel Weinreich Program at New York University offers peerless instruction in Yiddish language and an in-depth exploration of the literature and culture of East European/American Jewry. The core of the program is a daily intensive language course at one of four levels, designed to develop proficiency in speaking, reading and writing as well as cultural literacy. As an essential complement to the morning course, students are required to attend afternoon Yiddish conversation classes, workshops and a lecture series. In 2010, we are offering several research-focused workshops and the possibility of internships in the YIVO Archives. In addition, there are related excursions and social events on some evenings and Sundays. Note that the intensive nature of the program precludes employment or enrollment in other courses, and allows only limited time for tourism. NYU is home to the Skirball Department of Hebrew and Judaic Studies, one of the largest university programs in Jewish studies in North America. YIVO is located just a few blocks away at the Center for Jewish History, where students will become acquainted with YIVO’s extensive library and archives, one of the world’s major collections of materials for the study of East European and American Jewish culture. The faculty and staff that bring the Yiddish summer program to life each summer are an impressive array of scholars, writers and artists, including the NYU Rauch Associate Professor of Yiddish Studies.

THREE GREAT REASONS TO JOIN US THIS SUMMER:

  • Earn undergraduate credits toward your language requirement
  • Access the YIVO archives and library, located just a few blocks from NYU
  • Experience summer in New York City, the heart of American Yiddish culture
