You can name YIVO as a beneficiary or contingent beneficiary of your IRA or pension plan. Generally all that is required is filling out a change of beneficiary form which your plan administrator will provide. YIVO’s Federal Tax Identification Number, which you may need, is 13-1641082
Because the distribution from standard IRAs and other qualified retirement plans are taxed as regular income when paid to anyone other than your spouse, your heirs may actually see far less than you want to leave them. When YIVO is the beneficiary, there is no taxation at all. IRA and pension benefits are generally considered income to individual beneficiaries and thus are taxed as ordinary income. Because YIVO is a tax exempt organization, any beneficiary gift we receive from an IRA or pension plan is completely tax-free.
