“Integrale Yidishkeyt”: Modern Yiddish Culture’s Turn Inward in Response to the Holocaust
Feb 24 2011

NATALIE AND MENDEL RACOLIN MEMORIAL LECTURE • MAX WEINREICH CENTER

Joshua Karlip, Assistant Professor, Yeshiva University

In both the ghettos of Nazi-occupied Eastern Europe and in the Americas, Yiddishist intellectuals reacted to the unfolding genocide by sanctifying the entirety of the East European Jewish experience, both religious and secular. This lecture analyzes this cultural retrenchment as manifested in both the South-American Yiddish journal Shriftn and in the Vilna ghetto diary of Zelig Hirsh Kalmanovitch.
